When I started doing these monster customs era-by-era, about 5 years back now, the plan was always to end here, with the show’s ‘Monster Era’. And now here we are! Normally I tackle the customs in a fairly random fashion, but this time I knew there’d be some tough jobs in the mix, so I set a schedule in advance, so as to alternate easy and tough ones. Starting with:

If anyone was wondering the best way to create a Kroton action figure – this is not it! Find a 3D printer, look for some CAD files (some are available on this very board), and print that sucker out. Only a masochist or an idiot would try sculpting a million small geometric details by hand…

So anyway, I built a frame for the Kroton in plasticard and sculpted a million tiny geometric details on by hand (in fairness, I did cheat a bit – once I’d created a section, I’d run out duplicates using moulding silicon). It was still a time consuming and laborious process.

The Kroton’s arms have a flexible core for posing, and the head rotates, but otherwise it’s a fairly static piece. I suspect he’s also a little tall (it’s tough creating scratch builds to an exact scale – once you start assembling all the parts, you have to commit to the size it offers), but it certainly makes him imposing.

Back to the start of the Troughton are, and a rather more traditional build for me:

The bulk of this is the Axon male figure, which is quickly becoming my go to base body as it’s nicely blank, and has about the best articulation the range has to offer.

The face is from the Marcus Scarman figure (I always thought the downturned mouth was a good fit for a Fish Person). All other details are sculpted in, with the head fins built around pieces of plasticard.

These are amazing- there are honestly not words good enough to describe them. You should feel proud- these are industry-level work, from the pictures.
