In correct terms, according to the production team, The Christmas Invasion is 1.X, The Runaway Bride is 2.X, Voyage of the Damned is 3.X, The Next Doctor is 4.X, The End of Time is 5.X (although not on the S5 DVD Box Set), A Christmas Carol is 6.X and TBC is 7.X. :)

The Encyclopedia lists them as-

2.X The Christmas Invasion
3.X The Runaway Bride
4.X Voyage of the Damned
6.X A Christmas Carol

So going by that, i can only guess this years special will be part of the series 7 production block and be called 7.X (or is it 11.3X??)

Not quite, that encyclopedia has so many errors in it that it is in no way correct at telling anything in terms of production (although it doesn't like to do so anyway).

The Christmas specials were all filmed alongside the following series so they were given production codes to match with the exception of The End of Time as that was made under a completely different production team. The interesting thing about A Christmas Carol is that it was planned under 11.1 but eventually produced with 11.2 so was given the production code 2.X, and this upcoming Christmas Special will be 3.X as that is the series it connects into under official production and contractual terms.

However, to muddy the waters further the Christmas Special after this one will also be part of 11.3 although that is due to complexities in schedulng that have yet to be resolved.

Not quite, but near enough right. At least it points to this year's Christmas Special is part of series 7.

It will be, certainly it will be thrown in with the DVD which will be the closest way of telling what applies to "Series 7" as it's BBC Worldwide who determine that system these days. We can only tell roughly what it is from the production team (who use the Moffat system, which makses this 11.3) and the BBC (who use the traditional system which makes this Series 33).

Well, almost correct. TEOT P1 is 4.17, ACC is 5.X and TBC is 6.X.

In your system it is, the problem is where the truth and people's personal systems get confused. I personally consider 11.2 to be two seperate series but I don't claim that it's code must be 11.3 because of it.

The true production codes for all these episodes is 2.X, 3.X, 4.X, 4.14, 4.17, 11.2.X (shortened to 2.X but that is the full title) and the upcoming one is 11.3.X.

This isn't a matter of being "correct" or not. That's your opinion, MJF.

It is when you claim it's what the production team call it. It's fine to call it whatever you like, but the facts get muddled up with opinions. We are all allowed to call it whtever we like, we all have freedom of speech and choice (within the confines of the rules of the forum of course) but mixing the two is dangerous as this argument is proving.

In official terms this upcoming special is part of the Eleventh Doctor's third series so this section is allowed to exist (although it would be slightly more appropriate when figures from the Special are announced).
