Well, there may well have been a nod from somebody about the Ood, because he was originally going to use something on a much bigger scale, but because they had already blown the budget, they needed something low-scale, that could work under hypnosis, etc - so resorted to the Ood.

I'm sure he went back to the long list and picked the Ood, it's something right up Gaimen's alley.

Stop making excuses for him!

Do you really think Gaiman would choose something as mediocre as the Ood? :P

Actually yes, probably because of the Lovecraftian appearance.

Both sort of right, the original idea for Nephew was another patchwork person like Auntie and Uncle. As both Uncle and Nephew were extremelly alien in design they needed to go back on it, so Uncle because more human and Nephew had to become an alien that had already been in the show. Having to choose an old alien he went for the Ood as they had a reputation for being possessed easily.

KGF you'll need to quote me for van Statten to see it.

I just stumbled onto this thread and I felt like as someone who really loves this show I had to reply as well. I've been extremely vocal with my displeasure of how the new show has been written and presented and I must confess I've felt it's been justified. After having watched this past season's finale I feel I've not only been proven correct, but I've really been vindicated.

Ever since Steven Moffat began writing and producing the show it has felt.. off. I struggled to put a finger on just why it was off, but I never really had a proper reply. Until now. Moffat has... moderate respect for the classic series, (His nod to Nicholas Courtney's passing tonight proved so), however I'm not sure he fully understands it. I'm not sure he appreciates it enough to leave the mythos intact rather than continually smite it at every turn. First we have day-glo Daleks who were former shells of themselves. Then we have a direct and abrupt change to the opening of the show. Having "Amy" do a voiceover describing who the Doctor is has never happened. I always thought it was a one-off type thing, but clearly it isn't. What was wrong with the classic way presenting the logo, the actors' names, and story title? That goes as far back as the beginning nearly and I see no need to change it now. Next follows the absurd cradle from Gallifrey that was presumed to be HIS cradle? No. The Doctor was never a baby. Not physically. And now we have perhaps the biggest, most glaring, insulting bit of all.... River Song. Self-proclaimed "wife" of The Doctor. If he isn't allowed to say "I Love You" to Rose Tyler then I'll be damned he's saddled with that ridiculous, pompous, frizzy haired know it all as a wife.

She is absolutely the worst thing to happen to the show. There have been unpopular companions, there have been wildly popular companions, and they come and go. Some are more fondly remembered than others, but the show never revolved around them. NEVER. It's Doctor Who. Not Doctor Who's Companion Hour. First Moffat makes the whole show about Amy. Everything affected Amy. Everything had something to do with her or about her. And as if that wasn't enough we have to now have honeymoon sex in the TARDIS to produce a half Time Lord/half Human baby which grows up to be River "Most ANNOYING CHARACTER EVER" Song. Self proclaimed killer and lover and wife of the Doctor. No. Okay? No. It's just too much for me as a fan of the classic series to swallow. And frankly if Moffat cared so much for the show's roots and established cannon he wouldn't make us swallow it at all.

So now on the twilight of yet another series completed I sit and I wonder.. what next? How can Moffat possibly chage this show any more until it's completely unrecognizable as being Doctor Who? What is he going to do now that he's chosen to go into a self imposed exile? How can it become more depressing, doomy, gloomy, and mopey? Will River Song FINALLY get off my screen so that maybe Moffat can write a few stories that don't revolve around her? Will we get new companions who suddenly aren't "The Doctor's Best Friends"? I mean... are we supposed to buy that out of every single companion he ever had those two are his best friends? What about Sarah Jane? What about his own granddaughter, Susan? What about Ace? Or Rose? Donna? Or Martha or Captain Jack? Are these people suddenly replaced in their importance because Amy and Rory gave us that wretched River Song? Well not in my eyes they're not. They are NO less important and frankly because of their personalities and how they were written and which Doctors they were paired with... I find them MORE important. More important now than ever since the show is just a shell of its former glory.

I miss MY Doctor Who. I miss the fun. The Laughs. The cooleness. Hell at this point I even miss the hokey old special effects and the silly villians. I just wish Moffat saw what I did when I watch. Maybe he'd want to make a few changes and bring the show back around, because right now? I think it's fading fast and I'm losing interest. That's something I never saw happening. Sad... really sad.

**forgive the profanity, but this was a passionate reply and one I took a great deal of time composing. I don't feel like I'm going to offend anyone by using colorful metaphors or language which is commonly heard everywhere**

Good call. I'd say that sums up most of what I think of Moff man. And he calls himself a fan... but seems determined to change everything about what it was that made the show great. His 11th Doctor episodes are I admit, anticipated and I enjoy watching them, but always feel insulted in some way afterwards. I have yet to really sit down and rewatch any 11th Doctor stuff. I watch Classic Who a lot, and I even rewatch 9th and 10th doctor stuff. But when we get stuff like that garbage of a Christmas episode that he thinks is amazing... come on man, get lost and let someone else take the reigns.
