What's interesting is that Amy and Rory are at home again and the Doctor turns up again. Same as episode 1. Do we think he's trying his best to stay away and let them get on with their lives, but failing dismally?

Not quite, Moffat explained it in DWM. Amy and Rory are now gone, they are no longer the Doctor's companions, he is travelling on his own now, the Ponds left at the end of The God Complex after all. The only difference is now that the Doctor has married their daughter, so he's sort of stuck with visiting his in-laws every few years (time is relative though, from both ends) and so he pops back every so often to visit them, although by not letting go of them like he usually does with companions... well lets just say it may come back to bite him in the bum.
