Ace died and came back to life! Actually the New Adventures followed what is called The Cartmel Master Plan, the original dirrection Andrew Cartmel was taking the show before it ended. If you notice, Commander Sorrenson in Curse of Fenric says "My Grandmother was British." he's touched by the Curse of Fenric cause Ace eneds up being his Grandmother. It's why her portrait is in Windsor Castle in Silver Nemisis, she ends up living in 18th Century France with a nobleman who also ends up being Sorenson's Grandfather.
