RUMOURED Air date

Are Some of These Rumours True?

Ianotimelord wrote:Yes but Doctor Who was not as popular as it is now. And it wasn't just Grade who destroyed Doctor Who, if you look at the Trial of a Time lord DVD & Survival. There really is no need to compare it. The BBC are making a lot of money from Dr Who, and the merchandise in the 80's was tiny compared to what we have now.

But that's after the attack happened. The ratings for Series 22 were brilliant (and are on par with what we get today in many cases). Even Timelash did well.

Doctor Who was breaking even or doing better for years (since 1984 at the earliest as that's when the figures were first published as far as I can see), The whole thing was sabotage led by Grade (although others were involved, we know that, but it was his palns they followed).

It's not as different as you may imagine, history repeats itself.

With the 2012 - 2013 season being S7, I wouldn't be surprized if the BBC pulled the plug on it - no matter how successful.

I remember when Star Trek TNG was pulled at S7, and that was it's highest rating season... then each new series got 7 years, cept my favorite, Enterprise. It only got 4.

The thing is, shows end. Nature of TV.

The 7 series thing is a US quirk, it's something to do with the way they originally draw up the actor's contracts. I think they usually sign them up for 5 or 6 years then negotiate hard for the subsequent series, by the seventh it gets too expensive to continue with the original cast. So you do one of 2 things, change out the cast, like they did with ER, or continually reboot like they did with Star Trek and Stargate.
I've just about had enough of you. Go that way. You'll be malfunctioning within a day, you near-sighted scrap pile. And don't let me catch you following me begging for help because you won't get it.

Except the commisioning lot called it Series 33 in the official paperwork (so there you go, yet another system used by a portion of the BBC). They are not thinking about it from the point of view of time since the revival.

By the sounds of things there was also a further commision (the "Series 34" commision) at the same time but they've kept the details on that one hushed up as they would need to reveal how many episodes were planned for the 50th celebration itself.

You can see the crash quite clearly there. Taking into account that recording technology had only just become affordable at that time so there wasn't as much of that until the end of the 80s (by which point Michael Grade's plans were well underway).

There was no investment in the show, no support from the hierarchy They just didn't know what to do with the show. No one else would produce it so they kept JNT as producer. I do believe that if he had left they would of made sure he wouldn't work for the BBC again. But considering their plans for season 27 I am glad they cancelled it, back then I wasn't.

As we never saw it we have no idea what it would have been like. Barely anything of what we know today would have happened in Series 27, most of it was the writers changing what facts they had made already and messing around with it.

They had started writing the script to "Earth Aid" but that was it. Even the title had not been decided at that point, they were all made for an article in DWM several years later.

Ace was to become a Time lord and the new companion would of been an upper class safe cracker.
