But the CD format remains, years after its storage capacity replacement (the DVD) appeared. The same will happen with Blu-Rays, they are just the next step. And when the step after Blu-Ray comes out nothing will happen and so on and so forth until some new format takes over, probablly portable storage devices like a USB pen drive. Most of them can hold more information than a standard DVD these days.

It already has, and within your lifetime. Do you not remember VHS or are you too young?

I'm feeling old. :(

I do remember VHS, but I wasn't really into tech when I was a child... I only have about 3 VHS's.

Hard copy personal storage will fade away in favor of 'cloud' technology.
Personally, I like tactile, hands on tech. I even buy my new albums in both CD and vinyl formats, but drop the CD straight into my iTunes so I can access it on all my i devices. My Doctor Who seasons 1 and 2 are on my iPad and I will drop the other seasons over soon. I guess I really like the best of all worlds 8-)

But there's a negative to each...

Pen-drive malfunction/crash

CD/DVD scratched/malfunction

How do you know DVD's will be gone and Doctor Who will be only on blu ray? A Little Dalek tell you? :-/

DVDs will not be replaced by Blu ray, at least not yet. Take a lot of old tv shows, old B&W films, they can't be put onto blu ray.

Oh, they can, and will. The quality won't do it any huge favors but it will get done.
Here, the movie stores are bringing in more and more BD, and the prices are plummeting on them. I don't think it can be long now till DVDs go the way of the video tape.
