Here, the movie stores are bringing in more and more BD, and the prices are plummeting on them. I don't think it can be long now till DVDs go the way of the video tape.

But Blu ray is still expensive compared to DVD. I would be angry if they started releasing classic Dr Who onto Blu ray after completing the DVD range.

The industry plans to phase out the DVD by the end of the year, so it could just be a Blu-Ray. And all those with just SD or who hate HD with a passion are stuck waiting for the DVD Files to bring it out.

Oh don't talk rubbish TED... DVDs are by far more popular than Blu-Ray and they will not be phasing them out anytime soon.

The word on the Russian front (a Major player in the manufacture of DVDs) is that they are gearing down DVD production.
Recent surveys are showing that hard copy sales are in deed moving towards Blu over DVD. 3D is a big factor. Blu ray has the capavity to recreate the real 3D using active shutter lense technology in a way that DVD just could not handle.
BD has at present a storage cap' of 50Gb on a duel layer disc - that's 10X that of DVD5 tech'.
BD will be used to present Doctor Who in less bulkier form, ex - Trial of a Timelord on one disc. Or a full season in one box of 4 BDs.
It will happen.

Well they'll need to reduce the price of the players and discs before the general population dump their DVDs in favour of BDs. Five years maybe, but certainly NOT by the end of this year.

Bd has dropped to 20% of it's selling cost 18 months ago over here. It is only marginally more expesive than DVD.
Players dropped in price as well. DVD players are so low now, you'd think they were giving them away. A sure sign that DVD is on the way out.
I give it 12 - 18 months and DVD production will be no more.

Do you remember Betamax, DVD?
That was meant to be the next step forward in home video... it died out.
Laser discs died out, Video 2000 too.

I think DVD will be around for a long time yet. The fact that you can still get your albums on plastic as well as CD shows that some things are timeless.

BD may very well be the weapon of choice for companies in the future, but I think we'll still be getting plenty of DVD releases for the next few years.

I'm certainly not buying a THIRD set of Star Trek TOS - first VHS, then remastered DVD... buying the series on BD is not going to happen. I'll buy a few DVD players and store them for when the others die.

And TED, I apologise for saying you were talking rubbish - should have said mince :D

"mince" - how Scottish !!! i used to say that all the time - "stop talking mince !!).

Lineage of my video systems -

Philips V2000 (2020) double sided tape system Blank 8 hour cassette cost 30.00. The system with dynamic tracking and stereo from day 1.
JVC (the inventor of VHS - actually, they bought the patent from Philips who had no faith in a single sided system which needed manual tracking) VHS. 3 hour cassette cost 10.00
Sanyo Betamax - Cant recall cost of tapes
Philips laserdisc system - Movies cost 20 - 30.00
Pioneer multi sized laser disc player (played 5", 8" and 12" discs.
Philips CDi - First true 5" disc video player, but required an additional piece to play movies properly that they forgot to mention !!
Various VHS machines from Sony (I liked Sony)
Philips DVD player (forget the model)
Philips DVD - R . Now this is when I got excited. 5 quid for a blank DVD (I get them for 10p now)
Various DVD players (There are about 4 in a cupboard, and I brought a couple to school)
Philips Blue Ray
Philips Blue Ray 3D

That brings me up to date.

I do buy Blue Ray discs, and can state clearly that the quality is amazing. I do watch tho on a rather large screen! I now get all thhe Nu Who on BD, and the HD picture looks superb; that opening vortex shot and the titles are stunning to behold.

Anyway, each to their own, but I am sure that the entertainment industry will wind down DVd production soon. Blue Ray won't last long tho. Digital Downloads and cloud storage are the obvious way to go.

Doesn't look like it will be replaced soon. I had a look on goggle and some interesting points here.

Back to topic. Interesting to see the Doctor doing something with the lamp. The only time I can remember where the lamp has been used in a story is in print, 5th Doctor comics Stockbridge Horror.

I've seen another picture in the national press where he's holding a  lightbulb, so I presume he's changing it with the lantern lid open.
