Painting soft plastic

Post by omega1963 »

Can anyone recommend paints to use on soft plastic? The plastic is fairly soft, almost rubbery. Previously the paint has remained sticky for months when I tried a couple of years ago when I used to use humbrol paints.

I've never used it on soft plastic personally but tamiya paints have a decent reputation so might be worth a go?

Tamiya might work. I’d say just prime it and undercoat.

Make sure you use a good primer, though. I bought some spray primer that absolutely refuses to dry on soft plastic.

Use a good primer, and if you need to paint it a solid color, invest in an airbrush. The thinner and more even the paint job is, the less likely it is to crack with age/movement.

Never use Humbrol - its horrific paint! Tamiya is good, Revell or the warhammer stuff should all be OK. I used Tamiys on a Sec to paint harry's blazer if that gives any useful reference?

Have you considered one of those latex-based paints?
