Recommend Some Non-TV Doctor Who

Post by skifflebits »

Hey Folks,

There are sooooo many other media Doctor Who is in besides TV these days -- books, comics, audio dramas, etc. -- it's hard to keep track of.

I thought it might be nice to start a thread where people can big-up some DW from other media that they've enjoyed.

I'll recommend Neil Gaiman's short story "Nothing O'Clock," featuring the 11th Doctor and Amy. Out of print, but available on Kindle for a song.

I'll also say that new Tenth Doctor "Time Lord Victorious" comic actually isn't bad. I'm curious whether it will go someplace good or not, but I really enjoyed the first issue, anyway.

I'd love to hear some things other people loved.

"Ten Little Aliens" may be the best First Doctor book I've ever read. It gets him, Ben, and Polly right and drops them into an 80s Scifi film, basically.

Also, any of the 4th Doctor Big Finish novel adaptions ("English Way of Death", "Well Mannered War", and "Romance of Crime") are probably the best 4th Doctor audios I've heard. I'm down for any recommendations that top them.

Ten Little Aliens was the first Dr. Who book I ever read. I enjoyed it.

Anything written by Jonathan Morris is great, Festival of Death, Tomorrow Windows and Touched by an Angel in the book range are all exemplary, and Plague City is pretty decent. CObwebs is the only of his Big Finishes I've listened to but it was a great time.

Also in the books "Nuclear Time" by Oli Smith is so so very good, can't recommend highly enough.

Oo! Haven't checked out the BF novel adaptations yet.

And I'm looking up Jonathan Morris right now...

The Tenth Doctor Titan Comics are pretty good imo. Particularly The Weeping Angels of Mons, which I love.

Nearly anything written by John Dorney, Chris Chapman, Robert Shearman or Jac Rayner for BF is pretty much perfection.

The Unbound Third Doctor run with David Warner is really good. So far, that consists of:

Sympathy for the Devil
Masters of War
The Unbound Universe
Ruler of the Universe
Buried Memories
Lost in Translation

Loads of BF Main Range stories:
Colditz
Spare Parts
The Fires of Vulcan
The Holy Terror
The One Doctor
The Marian Conspiracy
The Spectre of Lanyon Moor
Jubilee
Project: Twilight
Doctor Who and the Pirates
Project: Lazarus
Arrangements for War
Thicker Than Water
The Juggernauts
Circular Time
The Chimes of Midnight
Seasons of Fear
Neverland
Davros
Omega
Master
The Wormery
Scherzo
The Natural History of Fear
The Harvest
Night Thoughts
Live 34
The Reaping
The Gathering
A Thousand Tiny Wings
Robophobia
A Death in the Family
The Silver Turk
The Curse of Davros
The Fourth Wall
The Widow’s Assassin
Masters of Earth
The Two Masters
Time in Office
Quicksilver
The Middle
The Behemoth
Static
Scorched Earth
Muse of Fire
Time Apart

I'll definitely second "Spare Parts," "Holy Terror," and "One Doctor."

And I've promised myself I'll only recommend three of any one thing at a time.

Big fan of the Marion Conspiracy - some of the early releases are really good, and I think they are heavily discounted as a download.

The Marian Conspiracy is like my favourite BF audio. It’s not necessarily the pinnacle of what they have to offer, but it’s still my favourite and I love it.
