5 inch Dalek Sec & Dalek with Mutant Reveal

What is a Dalek?

Dalek history goes back to 1963 and the second serial of the original classic BBC Doctor Who TV series written by Terry Nation (1930-1997). First Doctor William Hartnell battled the mutants in Nation's The Daleks. Terry Nation and subsequently the Nation estate, jointly own the copyright to the Daleks with the BBC.

The Daleks were an instant hit then and today still have an iconic status in popular culture.

Daleks are not robots, they are actually a race of mutants from the planet Skaro that inhabit their mechanical shells in a manner more akin to cyborgs. They can however exit the shell to reveal their true hideous alien squid-like nature.

With an unquestioning belief in their total superiority, the Daleks sole purpose is to exterminate all other lifeforms.

The huge popularity of the Daleks in Doctor Who lead to an invasion of Dalek merchandise. Read more about Dalek toy history

The very first Dalek toy was released in 1964; a battery-operated Dalek figure by Louis Marx which could glide on wheels while flashing its head light.

The early Dalek toys are now very much collector's items.

In the 60's you could also get rubber Dalek puppets and clockwork Daleks!

By the 1970's you could buy talking Daleks from Palitoy in various colours which naturally said things like "Exterminate!" and "You Will Obey!"

In 1977 Mego and Denys Fisher released a red-domed 6" Dalek action figure. Denys Fisher

In the 80's you could build your own Dalek model from a kit made by Sevans.

Until 2001 Dapol produced a range of Dalek action figures including a Davros figure and see-through Transmat Dalek. Dapol Daleks

Product Enterprises then became the BBC Worldwide's master Toy Licensee and released new talking Daleks and later Roll-A-Matic Daleks.

Character Options Radio Controlled Daleks

The very first Character Options five inch Radio Controlled Daleks were released in the Dalek Battle Pack.

Bronze Dalek from Dalek Battle Pack Black Dalek from Dalek Battle Pack

See the inside of an RC Dalek Click to See/Hear

The Dalek Battle Pack also included Character's first five inch action figures; the 9th Doctor and Rose. Though the Daleks remain the same, other versions of this pack have been released with the 10th Doctor and the Cyberleader.

The first release version of the RC Dalek in the Battle Pack is the standard gold version as seen in Dalek (2005). The second and later release version however has a special combination of gold and black not seen in the TV series. Character Options gave this Dalek a unique ID tag under its eyestalk. Both these Daleks have a slightly translucent section on the grille under the dome - this is to allow the infrared transmitters to be used to battle. They also have poseable guns and arms, and flashing head lamps to indicate damage. See the RC Dalek Interior

At around the same time, Character released the large 12 inch gold RC Dalek.

Despite production problems, 12" RC Dalek was the number one Christmas toy of 2005. It was given standard Dalek phrases such as "You are an enemy of the Daleks!" and the archetypal "EXTERMINATE!" as well as Dalek gun sounds.

All the 12" Daleks also feature a rotating gun platform, poseable appendages and automatic head and eyestalk movement, with a glowing eye and lamps that flash in time to speech.

Following this, a separate 5" RC Dalek was released. This Dalek was basically the same as the gold Battle Pack Dalek - but without flashing headlamps, and with the translucent section replaced by an opaque one. The 5" Daleks say "Seek, locate, destroy" randomly as they move around, and "Exterminate!" when a button is pressed on the controller.

Soon after this, new 12" Assault Daleks and Imperial Guard Daleks were released, with special weaponry and colour schemes. The speech was the same as the standard 12" Dalek.

After Doomsday, revised 5" repaints and the new 12" RC Dalek Sec were brought out.

The 5" RC Dalek is just like the gold version, except in black, with the Dalek Sec name tag under the eyestalk and with a ball bearing instead of a front wheel.

The 12" RC Dalek Sec had completely revised speech, with a deeper voice and new phrases in keeping with Dalek Sec's seniority - such as "No other warning will be given!" and "Multiple spectrum scanning now engaged!".

The second set of gold 5" inch Daleks now had the "Dalek Sec" name tag in error, and the studs on the body and base were unpainted.

Dalek Sec and RC Dalek Sec compared Dalek Sec and RC Dalek Sec compared

All the Daleks move on two motorized wheels which are controlled by a dual stick controller and a third free-moving wheel. This creates authentic-looking Dalek movement, plus, you can get the Dalek to spin around whilst staying on the same spot.

The 12" control unit has several buttons down the middle which control speech, while the 5" Daleks just have the one. Both control units are loosely based around the bodywork of the Dalek.

More Radio Controlled Daleks are anticipated. The second half of 2007 sees the release of 12" Dalek Thay and 18" Voice Interactive Dalek Sec and Dalek Vision. RC Daleks Courtesy of Jacob R
